The Blueberry Patch

When we moved into our new home 12 years ago, we decided to clear more land in the front yard.  Having no equipment, we pulled trees out with Rons van.

Ron was excited to find blueberry bushes while we were clearing one day.  There were blueberries bushes in the back yard of his childhood home and finding them brought back fond memories for him.

He remembers his mom laboriously picking those little wild bluberries (out in the baking sun mind you...) and baking up some goodies to help feed her brood of 8 boys.

Wanting to nurture the little boy in him, I decided I was going to create the best blueberry patch ever! I could make blueberry muffins, blueberry pancakes, and blueberries and creme just like his momma used to make.

I started transplanting some bushes over to an area where several were already growing. I made sure I kept them watered.  I even fed them plant food. My honey was going to have his blueberries!

Of course, I didn't know a thing about growing blueberries. I'm pretty much used to just planting stuff, and lucking out.

Not exactly a green thumb...maybe a bit lime green?

As days turned to weeks, a magnitude of flowers graced our bushes- we were in for a lot of blueberries!

Soon the blueberry buds turned red.

I was getting a sneaking suspicion that something just wasn't right here....

Several days later, Ron's brother Jimmy stopped by. He still lived on the land they grew up on and the bluberries still prospered there.

Jimmy confirmed my suspicions. What we had was NOT a blueberry bush.

Our front yard was beautifully landscaped with rows of very healthy, lush, "snake berry" bushes!

The neighbors probably thought we were crazy!

Since then we have pulled out the snake berry bushes, created several other landscaping disasters for the neighbors to tsk-tsk about, and generally have collected a few humerous stories to pass on to the generations.

And, we did find two blueberry bushes on our land, which provide about a handful of fruit every year.

Guess we'll just stick with going to our friends blueberry farm and picking them there!
